Defect Elimination on Slew Drives
One of our customers found themselves in a bind when the slew drives on their diggers were found to be failing prematurely. Limited support was being provided by the OEM at the time and as a consequence, they approached Geographe for a solution through failure analysis since each new slew drive was costing them in excess of AUD$85,000.
Upon investigation, the secondary planet carrier was found to be poorly engineered. This led to prematurely wearing the planet carrier spline which in turn quickly contaminated the lubricating oil. As a result, this accelerated bearing and gear wear leading to catastrophic failure and total loss of drive.
In addressing the metallurgical shortcomings, Geographe came up with a solution that is both comprehensive and cost effective. To avoid the significant cost of a new planet carrier, we manufactured and fit a case hardened insert into the existing, prepared housing. The insert easily accommodates the associated loads and is replaceable should the need arise.
