Geographe’s BSRT Series │ Driving Safer Haul Truck Maintenance with New 777 Model

Maintaining heavy mining equipment is not an easy task. More than wear and tear, the harsh environment of mine sites collaborates with the seizing and welding of critical components, making it harder for extraction and replacement during planned or reactive maintenance. The lack of effective tools to remove such parts results in maintenance teams resorting to traditional and dangerous practices such as hammering, jacking or thermal lancing.

The challenge of extracting seized ball studs in steering arms of Caterpillar Haul Truck fleets is constant on mine sites around the globe.  A few years ago, Geographe collaborated with Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), one of Australia’s biggest Iron Ore miners, to develop a solution to both increase safety and reduce maintenance labour time during the extraction of the seized ball studs.

This collaboration resulted in the creation of the Ball Stud Removal Tool (BSRT), which proved to be a smart and practical solution for Caterpillar 785, 789, and 793 models. The success of this initiative led to the sale of over 70 BSRT tools across the globe. Fast forward to October 2024, and Geographe has developed another BSRT variation tailored to the Caterpillar 777 model, now available for mining customers.

Streamline maintenance and minimise downtime

Designed with maintenance teams in mind, the 777 BSRT offers several key benefits that directly support safety and productivity on site:

Time Saving

The BSRT significantly reduces the time required compared to traditional, labour-intensive methods.

Reduced Downtime

Eliminate the need for hot works, grinding, hammering, and jacking. The BSRT enables faster extraction times and minimises maintenance delays.

Reduced damage to vehicle components

Minimise vehicle damage by avoiding excessive force and unnecessary stress on components.

Safer and Hazard-Free Procedures

Eliminate the need for hazardous tasks like hot works, grinding, hammering, and jacking; reducing injury risks and minimising reliance on non-compliant methods.

Ergonomically Designed

Weighing only 20 kg, the BSRT is easy to handle, reducing strain and injury risk while meeting HSEQ considerations for safety and ergonomics.

No Power Required

Operates without electricity when using a hydraulic hand pump, making it perfect for remote or challenging work environments outside the workshop.
